Snow Day!

Singer Phoebe Snow was born in New York City today in 1950 and grew up in Teaneck, NJ. Born Phoebe Ann Laub, her stage name is that of a fictional advertising character created in the early 1900s to promote the Lackawanna Railroad’s clean-burning coal.

In 1975, Snow gave birth to a severely brain-damaged daughter, Valerie Rose. Rather than institutionalize the child, Snow cared for her at home until Valerie died in 2007 at the age of 31. Phoebe died of a brain hemorrhage in 2010. Her first and biggest hit came in 1975 with this song:
